So, an unexpected month-long plus one day hiatus. I lost track of the time over the Labor Day weekend reading too much barduil fanfiction and then I was so tired the past few weeks from working 10-12 hour days I just slept through the weekends. And yet another Sunday has rolled past and here I am writing a very messy blog entry. I meant to have this done by last Friday, as I had wanted to spend the weekend baking and eating things that were not good for me.
Anyway, my thoughts about the Hobbit might be shorter than the previous entry only because I want to write an update for this blog but I am also very tired. I can’t guarantee it will be coherent, only because I spend the last weekend rewatching all of the extended versions of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and then this weekend watching the first Hobbit movie yet again. And, as I’ve said, I have also been consuming a ridiculous amount of fanfiction. Initially, I was going to have to say that the Hobbit movies are pretty much like candy floss, fun, visually appealing, but having very little substance. However, I truly do not remember the book at all, so I might be wrong.
Now I recently ran across this post on tumblr. It really does embody my thoughts toward shipping in this fandom. On that note, I am going to say that I don’t like character death in almost any shape or form. I like happy endings, I want my faves to have happy endings. That being said, I’m still wishy-washy about whether or not Thorin should have lived (an only because he’s not a fave). He was quite a bit of a jerk, but Bilbo fell in love with him so my shipper heart wants that to happen (only because he is a fave). I do like Tauriel and Kili being together only because I think she and Legolas being BFFs works ways better. It makes Legolas more relatable and not as classist as his father. Then again, the less than twenty minutes of interaction between Thranduil and Bard have spawned a whole ship that tears apart those structures.
I think one of the rare ships that I am enjoying recently is Bilbo and Kili. It is nice to see the lead character paired up with someone who did not verbally abuse or physically threaten him for nine-tenths of the story. Some of them are quite creative since there is not only the work of having to do a retcon but also having to find a way around the more popular and canon relationships. Then, of course, multiple crack ships factor into this like Smaugbo. That one is just amusing beyond words. Even though I am a firm believer in Rule 34, I don’t think it would have come into being without Freeman and Benedict having been in Sherlock together. I probably will go into more detail on johnlock at some other point in the future.
So back on the subject of character death and my faves, chapter seven of “The Destiny of a King” is up if you want to check it out. I may be off schedule but I am still plodding forward with the writing. Only two chapters left of the aforementioned then it’s on to finishing “Context is Key”. Plot bunnies abound, until next time y’all!
