National Novel Writing Month 2020

The last time I completed a NaNoWriMo was in 2012, so here is to hoping for success this time around. I think I am in a better position this year than previous ones. My work is finally less stressful now that I have a different boss. I’m exceedingly better at planning than I was in previous years and I’ve begun to prioritise my writing time. So I’m planning to get my 50K spread between two large stories, at least two other WIPs, plus a few one shots. The goal stands at about 1,500-2,500 words a chapter and if I do the standard 1,667 a day that should be a chapter every one, to one and a half days. Check out this tag on my tumblr if you want sporadic updates on how I’m doing.

My Alec Trevelyan/Sam Winchester soulmate fic, “A Matter of Dates” is going to be between eight and ten chapters. I have it vaguely outlined and various snippets of a few chapters already written. Chapter one is published and chapter two will set the groundwork for the timeline to the present. I’m going with the tropes of the older soulmate stops ageing until the younger catches up with them, and James Bond is a name that is passed on to the new 007. I’m pretty much ignoring the Supernatural canon just because I don’t want to write the apocalypse arc. I might have a few run-ins with things here and there but Sam will be pretty much removed from the supernatural world as a whole.

The Alec Trevelyan/Gareth Mallory story, “Can’t Even Sit Straight” will be about ten chapters. It’s been plotted and most of the chapters outlined. I’m a bit excited for this one only because I want it to be a bit light-hearted and mushy with a side of comedy and dash of espionage. I’m still trying to decide if I want to retcon Spectre or let it be and make Bond beg Q for forgiveness after running away with you know who. I feel like the latter option might make the story too angsty, especially when they are not the main pairing.

There are two other current WIPs on the schedule. “Context is Key” featuring 00Q/Sam, I only have two chapters left with absolutely no outline. I feel it should be relatively easy to get through this one but it seems like my motivation is lacking for this particular fic. The other is “Searching the Voids”, my Person of Interest Reese/Finch/Sam endeavour. This also has two chapters left and I have written a bit in both but the rest of it is a jumbled mess of ideas I am trying to fit together. If I have time I would also like to finish “Into the Frying Pan,” my Criminal Minds crossover that sorely needs the first chapter rewritten to make the following chapters more coherent.

Since I have the first chapter of the first two fics already written and posted, I am going to pad my goals with some extra one shots that I will determine towards the end of the month. So once I reach that point I will be pantsing it. I will definitely be posting a Good Omens snake Crowley fic that I only have to polish it up a bit. It’s been languishing on my computer for months now in need of editing. The rest of the stories I am considering writing will be from my Adventures of the Sailing Ship Sam Winchester series. There is a Teen Wolf Supernatural crossover with Sam and Sheriff Stilinski based off of this prompt, “I broke into your house thinking it was mine because I was drunk af and now you are making me breakfast.” I’ve also got a Star Trek Supernatural crossover, featuring Sam and Leonard McCoy. It will be a time travel fic to the future for Alexandria Organisation Sam, wherein science clashes with the supernatural. The last one I am thinking about is also the least plotted out of the three. It’s a Doctor Who crossover with Rose and the Metacrisis Doctor. Trying to figure out what I want to do with it since it a bunch of vignettes that I want to string together into some sort of coherent story.

I am thinking of adding a bunch of WIPs to my current list of writing. I have a bunch of stories where I’ve finished the first chapter or that the first chapter just needs a bit of polish. However, I am loath to contribute more unfinished works to my catalogue. I know there are those of you out there that click that option “Complete Works Only.” I happen to be one of them so I feel like I might be spinning my wheels posting unfinished fics. I appreciate any feedback on this – Yes, moar fic! No – please finish your current stuff! or flavours of those answers to that effect if possible.

I’ve updated the schedule and the prompt list for the SS Sam series if anyone wants to suggest some titles for the works listed above. Just a note, WIP Wednesday is going on hiatus until NaNo is over unless I get too excited and simply must share something. Plot bunnies abound, until next time y’all!
